Moorland clouded yellow
COLIAS PALAENO
Moorland clouded yellow is a small butterfly in the Pieridae tribe that flies in high summer. The edges of its wings are dark and otherwise yellow on males and white on females. The underside of its wings is yellowish.
Moorland clouded yellow lives mainly on pine bogs. Its area of distribution includes Central and Northern Europe, Siberia and Japan.
The caterpillar of the Moorland clouded yellow is brown when young but later turns green, with a yellow stripe on its side. It feeds only on Bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum) leaves, which is why there is a direct relation between Bog bilberry and Moorland clouded yellow occurrences.
As a least concern species Moorland clouded yellow requires no conservation measures to secure its occurrence.
