Herb-paris
PARIS QUADRIFOLIA
Herb-paris is a perennial and herbaceous plant that flowers in May-June with yellowish green flowers. Usually it has four reticulated leaves but on nutrient-rich sites it may also have more leaves. Herb-paris has one blue-black and highly poisonous berry per plant.
The habitats of herb-paris include mesic and herb-rich forests, herb-rich meadows and nutrient-rich spruce mires. The species is common in Europe and becomes less frequent in Asia.
Despite being poisonous, the plant has been used as a medicinal herb to treat wounds and abscesses and as eye medicine. It has also been used to poison predators like wolves. However, birds can consume the berries and thus spread its seeds.
Herb-paris is a common species in both protected groves and groves in commercial forests.
