Eurasian blue tit

PARUS CAERULEUS

birds

The top of the head of the Eurasian blue tit is blue, what distinguishes it from the other small bird species living in Finland. The plumage of the species is very colorful. In addition to the blue crown the Eurasian blue tit has a white face, a yellow belly and a green back. The Eurasian blue tit gets its food mainly from the deciduous trees and bushes. In summer it feeds on insects living on the deciduous trees and in the winter it eats the seeds of the deciduous trees. In the winter the Eurasian blue tit also visits bird tables.

In Finland the Eurasian blue tit nests in rich deciduous and mixed forests. During winter it also spends time in canebrakes. The Eurasian blue tit mainly nests in Europe, but they are also found in North Africa and Canary Islands. In Finland the Eurasian blue tit nested for the first time in 1859 which means that it is quite a new species in here.

As a species that requires deciduous trees in its habitat, the Eurasian blue tit benefits from mixed tree species composition in conifer-dominated forest. By leaving deadwood unharvested, hole-nesting species including Eurasian blue tit can be supported.
