Dandelion
TARAXACUM OFFICINALE
Dandelions are perennial plants that divide into several subspecies very similar to one another. Its green leaves form a tight rosette where its stems rise. The bright yellow flower heads are located at the top of the stems. Dandelion blooms between May and July.
Dandelion grows in meadows, on roadsides, in barren land, yards and on the shore. It spreads effectively with its seeds that fly because of their parachute-like fluff. The natural distribution of dandelion covers Europe and Asia but the species has naturalised in almost every corner of the world.
Although dandelion is considered a weed, it has had several different uses. At one time its parts were used as medicinal herbs, coffee substitute and in textile dyeing. Nowadays it is used, for example, in salads. Dandelion leaves contain a lot of vitamins.
As a common species dandelion requires no conservation measures to secure its occurrence.
