Cleft bog-moss
SPHAGNUM RIPARIUM
Cleft bog-moss is a large, bright green moss with a large and prominent pointed tip of the loop. The branch leaves are long, narrow and long-pointed. The light-colored stem breaks with a snap when folded.
Cleft bog-moss grows on low and medium nutrient bogs, waterfronts and marshes. Prevalence area covers the coniferous forest zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Common in northern Scandinavia, less common in southern parts.
Cleft bog-moss lives most often in open bogs, which are of great importance in our cultural history. Different species of Sphagnum mosses are antiseptic and have been used in wound healing in historical times, for example during both World Wars.
Cleft bog-moss is a common basic species. It forms extensive vegetations and its colonies can be thousands of years old.
