Red-stemmed feathermoss

PLEUROZIUM SCHREBERI

mosses

The yellowish green red-stemmed feathermoss is the most common moss species in Finland. Its red stems branch in a way that makes the moss look feather-like. Red-stemmed feathermoss forms solid moss carpets on the forest floor.

The red-stemmed feathermoss grows on the ground, deadwood and rocks as well as on the tussocks in pine bogs. It thrives in mesic, sub-xeric and xeric heath forests. The red-stemmed feathermoss occurs in the coniferous zone of the Northern Hemisphere.

At one time, the red-stemmed feathermoss was used to insulate house walls. As many other moss species, red-stemmed feathermoss can be considered a bio-indicator of the environment.

As a common species of our forests, red-stemmed feathermoss requires no conservation to secure its occurrence.
