other vascular plants

Orpine is a sturdy-stemmed perennial plant that flowers in July. The color of its flowers is dependent on its habitat and can be reddish, light yellow or greenish-white. In Finland orpine has been called ‘the cliff potato’ due to its thick and juicy tuberous roots.

Orpine thrives on rocky and sandy sites like cliffs, hillsides, fields and sea shores. Its area of distribution ranges from Europe to the temperate zone of Asia.

Orpine is a food plant for caterpillars of two endangered butterfly species, apollos (Parnassius apollo) and chequered blues (Scolitantides orion). Orpine can be used as wild vegetable, but when collecting orpines one should keep in mind the endangered state of these butterflies. Orpine is also popular plant in rockeries.

Securing the habitats of orpine is important for the protection of the endangered butterfly species dependent on it.
